Recitation Competition Finals & "Virtual Orchid Pavilion" Live Broadcast in Shaoxing
        By Zhejiang Library | November 05, 2020

Located in the southwest suburb of Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, the Orchid Pavilion is a key point of interest, as an important stop on the Road of Tang Poetry in East Zhejiang. Its attraction not only comes from magnificent landscape and graceful southern China gardening sights, but also from profound historical culture and its unique and vast reputation in the calligraphic field.

The Orchid Pavilion (Lan Ting) was originally the site where Gou Jian, the King of the Yue State during the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC), planted orchids. Later it became famous for Wang Xizhi, a renowned calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). His Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Anthology has made the Orchid Pavilion the Calligraphic Mecca, at the same time making himself the sage of calligraphy.

In November 2020, Zhejiang Library, together with Shaoxing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, held the Poetry Recitation Competition Finals in Shaoxing, and jointly launched the live broadcast promotion activity "Virtual Orchid Pavilion", taking the landscape of the pavilion as the scene, and using the form of real-life reading to fully demonstrate the beauty of Poetry Road in Shaoxing and promote his cultural tourism image.

Previously, with the theme of "Construction of Poetry Road Cultural Belt", Zhejiang Library has held the preliminary and semi-finals of the recitation online. A total of more than 1,000 people from across the province have signed up for the competition and eventually, 27 works entered the finals through primary selection, expert review, and public review.

Finalist work: recitation + traditional Chinese dance

This final is based on the real scene and organically combined with the contestants' entries, breaking the traditional centralized stage performance form, and integrating a mobile recitation session with strong observability, rich cultural heritage and landscape scenery. A review room was set in the Orchid Pavilion Scenic Spot and the judges was asked to watch the live broadcast and to score online. A reception room was also arranged where the guests could watch the live broadcast. Some other audiences, if they would like to, could watch on-site. After the judging, the judges and guests moved to the main performance venue, Ancestral Monument, where the awards were held.
